Studenten21 augustus 2012 16:56 |De drie leden van het punkcollectief Pussy Riot mogen hun verdiende straf niet ontlopen. Dat schrijft rechtenstudente Malgosia Krakowska in een commentaar op de website van Alibi, het opinieblad van de juridische faculteit van de UvA.
Pussy Riot heeft een domme fout gemaakt door op te treden in een Moskouse kathedraal, betoogt Krakowska. Vrijheid van meningsuiting wordt immers begrensd door respect voor religie. Bovendien, vervolgt de studente, mogen we niet vergeten dat het geloof en de geestelijken het onder het communistische regime tijdens de Sovjetjaren zwaar te verduren hebben gehad. Met de misdaden van dit totalitaire regime in het achterhoofd, kun je de actie dus niet anders bestempelen dan ‘onwetend, zelfs stom’.
De drie bandleden moeten daarom boeten voor hun daden, stelt de rechtenstudente. Maar niet met gevangenisstraf, zoals de rechter besloten heeft. Een boete of taakstraf ten gunste van de orthodoxe kerk volstaat.

Ms. Krakowska is obviously rather removed from the rising tensions between the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the liberal public. The choice to perform (protest) in the main Cathedral has not been a “stupid mistake”, rather it was a deliberate act aimed to caricature tightening relationship between the ROC’s and the government. The resulting political spillover and media bonanza only strengthened their point. Would Pussy Riot do the same in a Russian mosque or a synagogue they’d likely get a minor fine and a media mention with little talk about freedom of expression or human rights.
The ROC should have prayed for the PR’s lost souls and publicly ask the government to let the girls go. Isn’t that what good Christians do?
Thanks for reading. Deliberate or not, the performers are not seen as those who exposed the corruption ties between Kremlin and the Great Patriarch. The result achieved is completely opposite: insulted religious feelings of millions of oridinary Russians and a legal ground for the incarceration of these women . Tactically, it was stupid. Liberal public’s tensions with regard to Putin did not prevent them to become Russia’s president for his 3rd term. There were more subtle ways of showing the disapproval.
